Moving averages and trend

What a moving average smooths away, and how the 50/200-day pair is used as a regime filter.

The averages smooth the daily wobble so the direction of travel is visible. Price above both with the 50 above the 200 describes an established uptrend.

  1. 1Golden cross. The 50-day crossing above the 200-day — a lagging confirmation of a turn that already happened, never a prediction.
  2. 2200-day line. The regime line: gate long candidates while price is above it, and stop hunting breakdowns while below.

Illustrative. In a sideways market the same lines whipsaw repeatedly — context first, indicators second.

What a moving average is

A simple moving average (SMA) is the average closing price over N days, redrawn every day. It removes the daily wobble so the direction of travel is visible.

Shorter averages (10, 20) hug price and react fast; longer averages (50, 200) turn slowly and describe the larger trend.

The 50-day and the 200-day

The 50-day is the medium-term line institutions watch; the 200-day is the conventional long-term regime line. Price above both with the 50 above the 200 describes an established uptrend.

When the 50 crosses above the 200 the pair call it a golden cross; below, a death cross. Both are lagging descriptions of a trend that already turned; they confirm rather than predict.

  • Price above both SMAs: uptrend regime.
  • Price below both: downtrend regime.
  • Price weaving between them: no clear trend. Ranges and false breaks dominate.
  • Golden/death crosses: confirmation, often late, never a guarantee.

Using it as a filter, never a signal

The useful application is gating: only look for long setups while price is above the 200-day, and only examine breakdowns while below. One rule removes half your bad candidate list.

In a sideways market the same lines whipsaw repeatedly, producing losses for anyone trading every cross. Context first: trend or range, then indicators.

Three things to remember

  1. 01A moving average smooths price to expose direction; length sets the timescale.
  2. 02The 50/200-day pair describes the regime; crosses confirm, they do not predict.
  3. 03Use averages to filter candidates; never treat them as standalone buy or sell orders.
